Bullying

Bullying is when someone is mean to you, you share your feelings and ask them to stop, and they don’t. The goal of the definition is to teach children how to differentiate between meanness and bullying. Meanness (non-bullying) is when someone is mean to you, you share your feelings and ask them to stop and they do. The decision as to when meanness rises to the level of bullying is determined by children under the guidance of an adult. The lesson "Just Joking" has a list of suggestions as to what can be said to handle meanness and a list as to what can be said to handle bullying. Here are two examples:

The Application of the Bullying Definition to Good Values

1. Caring about the feelings of others is important.

If someone is mean to you and you share your feelings, you ask them to stop and they do, then they are not bullying you. Therefore it is your obligation to continue to be concerned about their feelings even though they have been mean to you. On the other hand, if someone is mean to you and you share your feelings, you ask them to stop and they don’t, then they are bullying you. In this case you don’t have an obligation to continue to be concerned about their feelings because they are bullying you.

2. Including others in activities is important.
If someone is mean to you and you share your feelings, you ask them to stop and they do, then they are not bullying you. Thus it is your obligation to continue to include them in your activities even though they have been mean to you. Conversely, if someone is mean to you and you share your feelings, you ask them to stop and they don't, then they are bullying you. In this case you don't have an obligation to include them in your activities because they are bullying you.

The above applications of the bullying definition can be applied to all other good values. Furthermore, the above two examples of dealing with bullying not only apply to the recipient of the mean act but also to friends and bystanders who have witnessed the mean act.
